You and Your Family

As a doctor, I am exposed to the real impact of long-term care on families and loved ones. It's tragic. That's why my wife and I have policies. We do NOT want to put our family through this. - Dr. Mark, Texas

You and your family are enjoying life; your retirement portfolio is in place; and then one of you gets the diagnosis of an extended illness or is seriously injured in an accident.  The potential costs for care whether at home or in a facility can destroy the nest egg, even a substantial one.

According to the Cost of Care Survey by Genworth Financial released in April, 2014, the average cost per year in the United States for a private room in a nursing home is $87,600.  In 20 years, this cost will be $219,000; in 30 years, it will be $378,600 based on the average 5% compound increase. The cost for 8 hours of state-licensed home health aides at an average cost of $20 an hour is $58,400 in today’s dollars.

But, the real cost is the personal impact extended care has on your family and friends. A long-term care insurance policy can help minimize the personal and financial consequences to the people who matter most in your life whether you are married or single.

It is also important to note that 74% of all claims start in the home, and 67% of those claims end in the home.  (Genworth Financial Claims Report 12/2009)  According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and MetLife, the average number of years caregiving takes place at home is 4.6 years, and the average age of the caregiver is 50.

If you have a condition that exhausts your long-term care insurance benefits, many states have put in place a partnership program that allows you to qualify for Medicaid and only spend down your personal assets to the benefit received from the long-term care insurance policy.  This reward for being proactive and protecting yourself with a partnership-approved long-term care insurance policy is called “asset disregard.”

Long-term care insurance is not for everyone.  This website is designed to provide you with information to determine if it is time for you to visit with a professional long-term care specialist and investigate your personal options.
